Psychiatric Nurse Practitioner

Position Summary

The Psychiatric Nurse Practitioner (PNP) is an advanced practice registered nurse (APRN) who specializes in mental health care. The PNP, provides direct care to patients and/or their caregivers regarding mental health, behavioral health and/or substance use/abuse counseling and treatment. The PNP may also provide consultation to other health care providers while facilitating the development of a comprehensive plan of care to address the whole person. This position adheres to all internal policies, widely accepted professional practice standards and requirements for professional practice and licensure.

Qualifications

  • Current license as a Nurse Practitioner in the state of Wisconsin

  • Master’s degree in Nursing with a specialization in Behavioral or Mental Health.
  • Certification as a Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner (PMHNP) by the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC)
  • Current and active DEA (Drug Enforcement Administration) registration for prescribing controlled substances
  • Maintain BLS certification.

Key Accountabilities

  1. Conduct thorough patient assessments and evaluations to determine mental health needs and develop and individualized treatment plans.
  2. Maintain accurate medical records and documentation in compliance with clinic policies.
  3. Monitor patient progress and adjust treatment plans as needed to ensure optimal care.
  4. Educate patients and their families about mental health conditions, treatment options, and resources available.
  5. Provide psychotherapy and medication management as needed.
  6. Demonstrate knowledge of common chronic illnesses in primary care (e.g., asthma, diabetes, heart disease, irritable bowel syndrome), including symptoms, mechanisms, common co-occurring behavioral health problems, and appropriate treatment. Identify mental health and substance use disorders and determine best treatments;
  7. Evaluate patients’ emotional, behavioral, and mental state through discussion, observation and analysis by interviewing; conducting physical examinations; observing behaviors; reviewing medical history and related documents; selecting, administering, and interpreting psychological tests; ordering laboratory tests and evaluating results.
  8. Treat patients by utilizing psychotherapeutic methods and medications; discussing progress toward goals with patients; providing instructions; monitoring effect of medications; tracking patients’ progress.
  9. Develop treatment plans by determining the nature and extent of cognitive, emotional, developmental, social, and behavioral disorders and establishing treatment goals and methodologies.
  10. Monitor and evaluate treatment results.
  11. Advise patients on how to cope with mental health and substance use disorders and emotional breakdowns.
  12. Provide consultations to primary care providers on topics such as assessment and diagnosis, psychoeducation, therapeutic interventions, health behavior change interventions, suicide risk, and crisis management services
  13. Establish collaborative relationships with support groups and other community resources that can serve as referral resources for patients
  14. Conduct thorough documentation of visits and medical orders to support billing charges.
  15. Complete billing components of visit to optimize revenue within documentation timeframes.
  16. Implement and manage Best Practices initiated by Quality Improvement/Quality Assurance committee and as assigned by the Population Health Director;
  17. Identify and prioritize medical decision making with a fiscally minded approach to care;
  18. Coordinate implementation of Quality Assurance measures to ensure data integrity and outcomes are met.

 

Compensation

$52.02-$75.00 per hour
